As you all heard about the free Wifi implementation across Penang. I don't really know what's the status at this point and who will be providing this service for us. Information started to show up about this free service and here's some info (not tested myself) about how to use this service.
Before we go any further there's of course such question as where? You guessed right as this service is not available everywhere in Penang yet. Since mentioned about less than a year ago by Penang's Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng about Wireless in Penang, earlier this year we see wireless service started to take off with WIMAX; a wireless broadband internet service, which was tested and shown that it was fast, but you pay a premium for it, not that much compare to Streamyx, I bet not everyone mind to switch over to somethin' new and stable .. for now.
With WIMAX soon to cover everywhere in Penang, that's just the beginnin'. As far as I know to use this service you need a special modem from them and the plan & packages doesn't look that tempting yet, now lets get back to our main topic, Penang Free WiFi.
Considered the first wave of many free wireless internet broadband to come, REDtone-HotGate seems to be the first. And again it's scarce; Komtar, Penang Road, Chulia Street, Bukit Jambul as rumored. Once you're there at the designated hotspot, with your wireless adapter, search for available wireless network and you'll find one called "Penang Free WiFi"; once connected to it, open your browser and you'll start connection to the Penang Free WiFi Registration page where you login (if you're already registered) or signup for a new account to use this service, is that simple. That's all I know for now, and there's another project called MyBroadband Penang WiFi, which I don't know about yet.
So that's just the beginnin' we'll see how it played out once more hotspot are available throughout Penang. More info can be found @ limguaneng.com
